Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/200/9990
Date
[c. 1311]
Description
Petitioners
John de St Loe; Joan de St Loe, wife of John de St Loe and daughter and heir of Alexander de Cheverel.
Name(s)
de St Loe; de St Loe, John; Joan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The St Loes request that the manor of Wynford Eagle be taken into the king's hand and delivered to them, or that they are answered in the assize of Mort d'Ancestor against Lovel and that the justices are able to proceed in the assize and do justice notwithstanding Lovel's charter from the king. Joan St Loe is the daughter and heir of Cheverel, and after Cheverel's death the manor was taken into the king's hand and leased to Lovel.1)
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justices that notwithstanding that charter they should proceed to take the assize according to the law and custom of the realm of England, and that before they proceed to judgment they should certify the king so that the king can do what by right ought to be done.2) No writ has been issued on this because the petitioner has elsewhere pursued to have a writ.
Places mentioned
Wynford Eagle, [Dorset]
Dorset.
People mentioned
Alexander de Cheverel, father of Joan de St Loe
Richard Lovel
John de Foxle (Foxley), justice.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1311 as it clearly postdates the grant of the manor of Wynford Eagle to Lovel, which grant was made on 4 January 1311 (CPR 1307-13, p.304). It seems unlikely that the petition can be too long after this, though legal process in the assize seems to have advance considerably.
