Reference
SC 8/200/9989
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
William Deincourt.
Name(s)
Deincourt, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William Deincourt states that he had previously petitioned stating that Edmund Deincourt, by a fine levied in the King's court, held the manors of Blankney, Branston, Granby, Holmesfield and Elmton for term of life of the King's grant, with remainder to William and the heirs of his body, and that after Edmund's death an inquisition found that this was so; but that a Joan, widow of Hamo [de Massey] was claiming dower from these manors. This petition was endorsed that the Chancellor was to [do justice], but William is being delayed. He asks that justice might be done to him.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be delivered to Chancery, and the Chancellor is to deliver the business contained in this petition without delay. And if there is some reason why the business cannot be expedited there, he is to bring the things touching this business before the council without delay, and it is to be delivered there in his presence.
Places mentioned
Blankney, [Lincolnshire]
Branston, [Lincolnshire]
Granby, [Nottinghamshire]
Holmesfield, [Derbyshire]
Elmton, [Derbyshire].
People mentioned
Edmund Deincourt
Joan [de Massey], widow of Hamo [de Massey]
Hamo [de Massey].
Note
The petition dates to 1327-1328 as several orders to escheators not to meddle with lands of the petitioners and the Masseys date to February and March 1327, and to February 1328 (CCR 1327-30, pp.52, 53, 254, 255). It would seem to be later than SC 8/169/8405, and so is probably from 1328.
