[c. 1292]
Description
Petitioners
Sabina le Taylour (Taylor), widow of Philip le Taylour (Taylor) of London.
Name(s)
Taylour (Taylor), Sabina
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Sabina le Taylour, widow of Philip le Taylour, states that her husband had a charter from Henry III that he and his heirs should not be made sheriffs or other servants of the King, but that he was amerced in £50 in the time of John de Kyrkeby because he refused to be Sheriff of London. This sum was demanded of her in the Exchequer, but by the grace of the Queen of Navarre, she had a writ to search the rolls of the Exchequer and to inform the King at his next parliament why Philip was amerced. This has now been returned to this parliament, stating that it is as she says, and she asks that the charter might be [...].
Nature of endorsement
The return in Chancery by the Exchequer concerning the cause of the amercement is to be examined.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
Philip le Taylour (Taylor) of London
John de Kyrkeby
Henry [III], King of England
[Blanche of Artois (Navarre)], Queen of Navarre.
Note
The will of the petitioner's husband was enrolled in the court of Husting in 1292, and the petition presumably dates to some point thereafter. The reference to the Queen of Navarre 'who God keep' might possibly suggest that the queen had since died; this is presumably Blanche, wife of Edmund, Earl of Lancaster, who died in 1302.
