Description
Petitioners
Peter de Maulay.
Name(s)
de Maulay, Peter
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Peter de Maulay states that after he left the Earl of Lancaster, when he realised that he wished to rise up against the King, and was coming to the aid of the King, Bartholomew de Badlismere captured him and forced him to agree to marry his eldest son to the daughter of Robert de Clyfford, and to make Bartholomew a recognisance for £20000, privately and our of court, which would become void if Peter enfeoffed his lands and tenements to John de Maulay, to the benefit of his son and his wife. And so under duress he enfeoffed his lands to John de Maulay: but because they are held of the King in chief and this was done without his permission, the Escheator entered and took the profits until Peter had made fine with the King, and received permission to be re-enfeoffed with the lands. However, John still holds he lands, so he has nothing except by the delivery of John, and the recognisance for £20000 is still demanded from him, as the King's chattel, as Bartholomew is forfeit to the King. He asks that the recognisance might be withdrawn, and that he might be re-enfeoffed in his lands and tenements, to hold them of the King as before.
