Nature of request
John de Warenne, Earl of Surrey, states that when he was in Wales at the King's command, William de Pakeham, Sheriff of Sussex, at the suit of the Abbot of Hyde and of Hugh de Bardouf, and at the command of Solomon de Roucestre and his companions, justices in Eyre in Sussex, distrained him by various animals, which he drove off and sold to four knights of the county, who bought them for the Earl's use; and that before he could get to Chichester, the matter was adjourned to the Bench and the issues forejudged. He asks to be discharged of these issues, and that compensation might be given to him for the sale.
