Nature of request
Nicholas de Cranford, rector of the church of Gillingham asks that he might have the tithes of the issues of the forest of Gillingham contained within the limits of his parish. He lists these issues. Alternatively, he requests reasonable compensation for his church for these tithes in other things, according to the provision of the King's council, or by the assessment of the Steward of the aforesaid forest and the oath of upright and law-worthy men of the King's same manor.He also states that a lawn called Marleye used to provide tithes for his church, either of corn or of herbage, before it was included in the forest in the time of John Biset, Justice [of the Forest].

Guy de Taunton is to be ordered to inquire into of what tithes the predecessors of the rector were in possession, and how much they are worth annually, and from what time they received nothing, and how much the land he is requesting in compensation is worth annually, and who holds it: and the inquiry is to be returned.

Note
CPR 1272-81 p.174 is dated 18 January 1276, and would seem to be in response to this petition. The inquisition in CIM 1219-1307 no.1106 was held on the Sunday before Michaelmas, 6 Edward I (1278).
