Reference
SC 8/199/9948
Date
[1272-? 1275]
Description
Petitioners
William de Marisco, son of Jordan de Marisco.
Name(s)
de Marisco, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Marisco, son of Jordan de Marisco, requests justice concerning the Isle of Lundy, which Henry III took into his hand with his other lands because William de Marisco son of Geoffrey de Marisco had entered it while he, William de Marisco son of Jordan de Marisco, was in Ireland. When he ascertained that he had not known of or consented to this, King Henry returned all William's other lands, but kept Lundy. He requests justice, and that the island might be returned to him.
Nature of endorsement
The King believes that because the King his father retained it and did not restore it, then he had some good reason for retaining it. Therefore he does not see that he ought to reply.
Places mentioned
Lundy Island, [Devon]
Ireland.
People mentioned
Jordan de Marisco
William de Marisco
Geoffrey de Marisco
Henry [III], King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to the period 1272-5, with reference to CFR 1272-1307, p.48 & p.50, which refer to the granting of Lundy to Geoffrey de Schanketon and Oliver de Dynaunt, and CIM 1219-1307, no.979, an inquisition held pursuant to a writ dated 24 May 3 Edward I (1275). It seems likely that the request from Marisco would pre-date the grants to Schanketon and Dynaunt.
