Date
[c. 1422]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Farnham, under-sheriff of Leicestershire.
Name(s)
Farnham, Thomas
Addressees
Duke of Gloucester, and the lords of parliament.
Occupation
under-sheriff of Leicestershire
Nature of request
Thomas Farnham, under-sheriff to Thomas Ardyngton, formerly Sheriff of Leicestershire, states that John Mapulton of Swithland sued a writ of trespass against various people, and that process continued on this writ until, after numerous failures to appear in court, they were put in exigent and then outlawed. But because there was not a sufficient period of time between two of the county courts at which they failed to appear, this outlawry was quashed, and the Sheriff amerced in 100 marks. The petitioner is bound to the former Sheriff in 200 marks. He asks that, as the writ of exigent was made on the advice of John Mapulton, this amercement, which is much higher than is customary in such cases, might be pardoned.
Nature of endorsement
The sum is to be divided into instalments by the Treasurer of England for the time being, to be paid at certain terms, so that the party is not too badly ruined by the swift levying of the said sum.

Note
Thomas Ardyngton was Sheriff of Leicestershire between November 1420 and May 1422. From this, and the references to the Duke of Gloucester and to the late King, this petition would seem to date from around 1422. A commission to inquire into the slaying of John Mapulton was issued on 10 May 1423 (CPR 1422-9 p.121).
