Description
Petitioners
Ralph Bateman.
Name(s)
Bateman, Ralph
Addressees
Bishop of London and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged]Ralph Bateman states that William Bateman and William Potton, clerk, were seised of the manor of Harlton, and agreed by a bond to pay [Elizabeth Flambard] an annuity for term of life for this manor, and that in the eighteenth year of Richard II, the year of her death, this annuity was fully paid. However, Eleanor Hant, her executrix procured an inquest which said that Elizabeth was not paid for the Easter term before her death, so that the bond was forfeited, and the manor of Harlton was valued at less than it should be, and granted to her until that sum was paid; she then died, but she and Edward Tirell, her son and executor, have taken far more from Harlton than they ought; [and it would seem that certain lands have been removed from Harlton]. The Duke of Bedford has sent letters to the present parliament, asking for justice to be done on this matter. He asks that Edward Tirell might [be summoned to] answer on this, and that the manor of Harlton might be restored to him, with the profit taken from it in the meantime.
