Description
Petitioners
Ralph Bateman.
Name(s)
Bateman, Ralph
Addressees
Duke of Gloucester, Protector of England, and the lords of parliament.
Nature of request
Ralph Bateman states that William Bateman, his brother, and William Potton, clerk, agreed by a bond to pay Elizabeth Flambard an annuity for term of life, for certain lands which she sold them, and that they paid this annuity in full. However, John and Edward Tyrell, sons of her executrix, procured an inquest which said that Elizabeth was not paid for the Easter term before her death, so that the bond was forfeited, and he was charged to pay £20 annually from Harlton until it was paid; and on the basis of this, without any authority, John and Edward have expelled Ralph from two other manors and other lands. He has sued against them, but they have prevented his suit by threats, and have falsely indicted him of various crimes, and are suing for an oyer and terminer against him. He asks that this might not be granted, and he asks the Duke and lords to examine the acquittance which he has for the disputed Easter term, and to charge John Tiptoft and John and Edward with finding sufficient security to be bound before the Chancellor to a recognizance to Ralph and to all the King's lieges on this, so that Ralph may safely sue his case.

The parties are to be warned to appear before the lords of parliament and to do what will be decided by the same lords.
