Reference
SC 8/199/9916
Date
[c. 1422]
Description
Petitioners
Elizabeth Reynald, widow of John Reynald.
Name(s)
Reynald, Elizabeth
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
Elizabeth, widow of John Reynald, sergeant at arms, now a recluse in the cemetary of the church of St Margaret, Westminster, states that Henry IV granted to her and her husband an annuity of 20 marks, for term of both their lives and the life of the survivor. Her husband died immediately afterwards, but Elizabeth was seised of the annuity until the manor from which the annuity was to be taken was granted to Queen Joan in dower; after which time she received nothing. Henry V granted her an annuity of £10 to replace this, but this lasted only for his lifetime. She asks the commons to ask the lords to have pity on her, that she might continue to have this £10 at the King's pleasure, from the time of his father's death.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Let it be sent to the lords.[None on dorse]
Places mentioned
Westminster.
People mentioned
John Reynald, sergeant at arms
Henry IV, King of England
Joan [of Navarre], Queen of England
Henry V, King of England.
Note
From the content, the mention of Henry IV and V, and the appeal to the lords rather than the King, this petition would seem to come from the early years of the reign of Henry VI.
