Nature of request
The commons of Kent state that the King's grandfather granted the Earl of Cambridge the constableship of Dover castle, but that he cannot perform that office or stock the castle properly without great expenses, which exceed the profit he receives from that office, as he is such a great lord. They ask that the Earl might receive a remuneration elsewhere equal to the value of this office, and that another lord of a lesser degree might be put in the Earl's place, someone who could remain in it continually for the profit of the King, the relief of the petitioners, and the salvation of the country.
