SC 8/199/9901
Date

Description
Petitioners
Merchants buying and selling wine of Gascony and Guyenne.
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that measures for ensuring the purity of wine form Gascony and Guyenne are now being neglected, so that the wine often becomes undrinkable within a year, and also that tuns of wine are being made of smaller measure than the English gauge, so that merchants pay customs on more wine than they buy; and that in response to this, the King has sent his letters patent commanding that the making of the wine and the assize are to be as they used to be. They ask the commons to ask the King and lords to ordain, with the authority of parliament, that these wines should be made after the good former manner, which they describe, and that all vessels in those parts should be made to the full assize, and those which are not should be forfeited; with fines for failure to carry this out.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Let it be sent to the lords.[None on dorse]
