Description
Petitioners
Goldsmiths of London.
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The goldsmiths of London make seven complaints against Nicholas Brembre, Mayor of London, showing that he has encroached to himself royal power and abused his office:1) He forced them to deliver up their charter to him and withheld it. They request a remedy as the law demands.2) He manipulated the mayoral elections by force and threats. They request a remedy.3) He imprisoned several goldsmiths, two of whom died. They request due punishment.4) He conspired with others to falsely indict good people of London of felony. They ask that Nicholas Exton, now Mayor of London, might be ordered to bring all indictments in his keeping before the King.5) He gathered large assemblies of his followers and took large sums of money from them, conspiring to destroy those who were against him; and this was before he ousted John Norhampton, Mayor of London, from office and had himself elected. They request due punishment.6) He broke the statute against victuallers holding office in London and other cities. They ask that this statute might be maintained and put into execution.7) They state that a book called the 'Jubilee' in the Guildhall, containing articles touching the good governance of London, which the Mayor, Recorder, Aldermen and commons of the city are sworn to obey, was burnt after the feast of Easter last, in the time of the current Mayor.
