Nature of request
Memorandum that on 9 May, 6 Henry IV, Robert Somerton, one of the Bailiffs of Bury St Edmunds, appearing before the King in Chancery, stated that he alone took the pleas in the court of Bury St Edmunds, when John Salman was condemned to pay 80 marks to Roger Drury, knight, and others, and 20 marks to Richard Alfrede and John Alfrede; and that he had only charged the jury to speak the truth on their fealty to the King and the lord of the fee, and had not taken an oath from them, as this was the custom of the town, but that he had put in the record and process that the inquisitions had been taken on oath, thinking that this amounted to the same thing in law.
