Description
Petitioners
Walter de la Ryvere (River).
Name(s)
Ryvere (River), Walter
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Walter de la Ryvere complains that Edmund de la Hide, his nephew, came to him saying that he could marry a wealthy lady if he had some land, and by his entreaties persuaded him to enfeoff him with all his land of Hanney: but in such a form that, after peaceful seisin, it would return to Walter. An indenture was made between them. But when Walter demanded his lands back, Edmund refused to give them to him, telling him to complain to the King - who at that time was in Gascony. There was also an agreement between them that Edmund would acquit him of 50 marks with a merchant of London, with whom Walter had a bond due on a certain day; but when the day came Edmund did not pay, but told the merchant to arrest Walter according to the terms of the new statute merchant, so that Walter remained in prison at Oxford between Michaelmas and Christmas, and Edmund has taken all his goods, movable and immovable. He is ready to aver this by the whole country of Berkshire; and requests a remedy.
