Nature of request
Letter to Edward III from the people of Church Stoke in Halcetor of the honour of Montgomery, asking him to remit to them a tallage imposed on them 30 years ago, as they have become impoverished and suffered greatly for their fidelity at the hands of the Welsh.
Nature of endorsement
De bosco, M. de Ovyneton succ[essit].
Places mentioned
Church Stoke, [Montgomeryshire, Wales]
Halcetor, [Montgomeryshire, Wales]
Montgomery honour

People mentioned
Edward [III], King of England
people of Church Stoke
[Edward II], King of England
Robert de Grendun (Grendon), Sheriff of Shropshire
M. de Ovyneton.
Note
From the mention of Robert de Grendon, Sheriff of Shropshire 1318-1322, and the King's father, this petition would seem to date to the early years of the reign of Edward III. Petitions Relating to Wales pp.329-30 dates it to c. 1332, with reference to mention of Welsh attacks on this area in CIM 1307-49 no.1325 (writ dated 16 April 6 Edward III (1332)) and to CPR 1330-34 p.298 (17 April 1332). The tallage mentioned might be that of 1303-4 - a date of thirty years after the tallage of 1312 would seem to be too late for the hand.
