John de Lewes, parson of the church of Buxted, belonging to the patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury, states that when he, lately parson of Withyham became involved in a suit concerning tithes before the ecclesiastical judges, the Prior of Mortain, the patron of the church of Withyham, brought a prohibition, although there was no mention in the suit of the advowson, but the justices will not proceed, nor will the Archbishop of Canterbury, patron of Buxted, although an inquisition has found in the meantime. He asks the King to provide a remedy: either to order the justices to proceed on the inquisition that has been taken, or to order the Sheriff of Sussex to inquire and to inform the King, or to provide some other suitable remedy.

Note
Tentatively dated with reference to the hand and language. CPR 1307-13 p.28 is the presentation of a John de Lewes to the church of Chailey, dated 6 October 1310 - which may or may not be the petitioner. There also appears to be a monument to a John de Lewis in Buxted church - but again, this may not be relevant.
