Description
Petitioners
Joan Comyn of Buchan.
Name(s)
Comyn, Joan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Joan Comyn of Buchan states that with the permission of Edward I she married the brother and heir of the Earl of Buchan, who died in King Edward's fealty, and that after her husband's death she left the lordship of Robert de Brus, who had made himself King of Scots, and her lands, and came to King Edward II in England. The King granted her an annuity, until she could have her lands in Scotland back or until she could be provided for elsewhere, but she lost this. The current King has granted her £40 annually, from the hands of the Sheriff of Yorkshire, which is not sufficient for her to live on honourably according to her estate: so she asks that she might have a reasonable sustenance until she can recover her lands in Scotland. She also complains that she is not able to receive this sum in full, and requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the £40, the Sheriff is to be ordered to pay her what is in arrears; and henceforth he is to pay her the £40 in accordance with the tenor of the King's letters. And with regard to further sustenance, coram rege.
