Description
Petitioners
Community of free tenants of the commote of Estimaner and the county of Merioneth.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The community of free tenants of the commote of Estimaner and the county of Merioneth state that they had formerly been obliged to roof the houses of the Prince of Wales at Estimaner with straw, but that after the conquest of Wales, this and other services were commuted to a payment of 20s annually. However, they were harassed by Robert de Exhale, sheriff of Merioneth, to rebuild the manor, which had been burnt down, although this was not their responsibility, so they requested a writ of inquiry from the King. This writ has now been returned by Roger de Mortuo Mari, Justice of Wales, and they request either a fitting response based on the tenor of this return, or another writ of inquiry.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is established by the assessment made after the conquest by the father of the present King that the maintenance of the said manor is arrented to the King at 20s annually, which rent the men of the said commote pay to the King annually, it seems to the auditors that the said men are not obliged to build the aforesaid manor again, and at the same time to pay the aforesaid rent.
