Nature of request
John de Briggewater states that although the King had granted him the keeping of the Hospital of St Mary Magdalen outside Southampton, and he was in seisin of it, when the King sent his letters to the Mayor and community of Southampton to allow him to have the keeping of that hospital, they expelled him from it, to his disinheritance and in prejudice of the King. He asks that the Mayor, together with four of the most respected citizens, might be ordered to appear before the King on the following Monday, to explain what right they claim, and why they have expelled him.
