- Nicholas de Teukesbury states that a commission from Chancery to inquire into whether it is to the King's harm or prejudice, or that of anyone else, if the vill of Dartmouth becomes a free borough has been returned that it is not to anyone's harm; but that the Chancellor does not wish to take the fine for making the charter for this without the King's special command. He requests the King's grace on this matter.

- C 143/139/18 is dated 13 Edward II (8 July 1319-7 July 1320), so this petition must date from shortly afterwards. The borough of Dartmouth originally comprised three distinct settlements, Clifton, Dartmouth and Hardness, sometimes combined, as here, into a single place name.
