Nature of request
[This document is partially illegible.]Letter to Alexander III from the community of Aberdeen: To the most serene prince . . . King of Scots . . . subjects, community of Aberdeen . . . reverence. Most excellent . . . letters we inform [you] that we understand that . . . detriment [of the] burgh/burgesses . . . that you wish to grant to the Earl of Mar . . . Kildrummy . . . we believe that to be to your advantage and to the benefit . . . Aberdeen, because the Earl . . . promised, that he wishes the said place by our burgesses . . . of Mar that everything which they have for sale, to be brought to the said [place] of Kildrummy, and what they cannot sell there, at Aberdeen . . . to be sold . . . of yours will pass through, those things which they were accustomed to sell elsewhere, where your advantage not . . . as it seems to us, you could grant the said community a burgh there without prejudice . . . however your right and honour, and saving to us and our successors our liberties . . . granted . . . and to our predecessors. May your Lordship and Excellence flourish long in the Lord. In testimony of these things we have had our common seal put to the present letters. Given at Aberdeen, on the eve of St Martin, in the year of the Lord 1264.
