Nature of request
This petition contains six requests:1) The Consuls and people of Condom state that they are impleaded in the court of France by the Bishop of Condom on certain matters touching the King's right and theirs, and that they have spent a lot of money on this suit. They request compensation.2) The Consuls state that the Bishop and his supporters are harming them on this matter, and request the right to bear arms for their protection and the maintenance of the King's right.3) The Consuls state that Peter de Lamissa and Doat and John Basterii, citizens of Condom, were accused of murder, but were acquitted before the Seneschal of the Agenais and this sentence was confirmed by the Seneschal of Gascony. They ask the King to confirm it under his great seal of England, and to pardon them the £120 Tournois in which they have been condemned, as they have impoverished themselves in defence of the King's right and the city's against the Bishop.4) The Consuls and people state that Raymond Durant, now Seneschal of Perigord and formerly chief judge of the Agenais, always acted well and loyally as a judge, and ask that he might be restored to that office.5) Gautier Matheu, merchant, asks for protection for himself and his companions, messengers for the city, as they are suspected by the Bishop and his supporters.6) The Consuls state that it is not the custom of the town for appeals to be made from any sentence given by the Bailiffs of the town to the Seneschal of Gascony or to anyone else of the King's power, and ask that such appeals cease.
