Description
Petitioners
Thomas Wake of Liddel.
Name(s)
Wake, Thomas
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Thomas Wake of Liddel states that he has been at war in the King's service since Easter, and that while he has been away and in spite of the King's protection, the Prior and monks of Spalding and the Abbot and monks of Crowland have ridden into his marshes of Deeping and Bourne, and have taken pontage there, beaten and wounded his shepherds, and committed other wrongs. He asks the King to order the Chancellor to issue a writ to the Sheriff of Lincolnshire to restore to him everything that has been taken from him since he left the country, so that everything is in the state it was when he left, and to ensure that his men and lands are not molested while he is at war in the King's service. And he asks that the Abbot and Prior might be attached on sufficient security to answer to the next parliament for their contempt of the King.
Nature of endorsement
Someone is to come before the King's council on behalf of the said Thomas and show what trespasses, specifically, have been committed, and by whom and against whom; and certain justices are to be appointed to inquire into and to hear and determine the trespasses committed in this way in contempt of the King, while Thomas was in the King's war and in his service and under the King's protection. And the Sheriff of the place is to be ordered to attend to the business and to the justices. And the Sheriff is also to be ordered by writ not to wrong, harass or molest Thomas, or his people, lands or possessions, or to allow them to be wronged, harassed or molested, but rather to maintain and defend him against such molestation insofar as it is in his power.
