Nature of request
This petition contains four separate requests:1) William Fiholle and Gerard de Marsan, merchants of Gascony, on their behalf and that of their companions, state that they have waited two years and more to be paid for wines taken from them for the King's use by Henry de Say, formerly the King's butler, and John de Weston, Chamberlain of Scotland, and are reduced to such poverty that they cannot afford to trade or to return to their country. They ask that they might be paid, or assigned half the customs of Southampton until they are paid in full.2) William Arnold, Lord of Auros, states that his ancestors have held the castle of Auros and the villages of Saint-Sulpice-de-Pommiers, Fountdouze, Berthez, and Labarthe from time immemorial, but that the king's ministers have wrongly taken the four villages into his hand. He asks that the Seneschal of Gascony might be ordered to inquire into the truth of this, and to return the inquisition to the King under his seal and under the seals of those by whom it was taken.3) Bertram Caillou states that the King had given him the bailiwick of Born, Labouheyre and Mimizan at pleasure, and asks that he might now hold it for term of life, with herbages and all appurtenances.4) Arnold de Laak requests the bailiwick of Saint-Clar in Lomagne, paying what was paid for this bailiwick for the last year. And he asks that £200 sterling, which is due to him for wages in Gascony, might be allowed in this payment; and that he might hold the bailiwick until the money has been levied.
