Reference
SC 8/193/9637
Date
[? c. 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Mayor and community of Limerick.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Mayor and community of Limerick state that the stone bridge linking their city with the Irish of Thomond has never been completed, hindering them from riding out of the city against the Irish, who have destroyed Bunratty castle and have driven the English back to the city itself. They ask that the bridge might be repaired and completed, so that they can mount an attack on the Irish and recover their lands.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the Justiciar of Ireland to enquire by what person or persons the bridge should be made, and who is obliged by right to maintain it, and if these people are able to do so, and to what profit it would be to the King and to his city of Limerick to repair the bridge, and to what harm if it were not repaired and completed, and with what sum of money the bridge can be adequately repaired and completed.
Places mentioned
Limerick, [County Limerick, Ireland]
Thomond, [Ireland]
Bunratty, [County Clare, Ireland].
Note
Dated to the reign of Edward III by 'Irish Ancient Petitions' p.62. Sayles, Affairs p.234, mentions that Bunratty castle was frequently attacked and was destroyed in 1332 - a date which would seem to fit with the hand and language.
