Description
Petitioners
Nicholas de Menyll, formerly Sheriff of Yorkshire.
Name(s)
de Menyll, Nicholas
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Sheriff of Yorkshire
Nature of request
Nicholas de Menyll states that Simon de Wakefeld, out of ill-feeling towards him because he did not want to have him below him in office when he was Sheriff of Yorkshire, against the King's will, has acquired a commission to John de Lisle and to John de Eure, to inquire into Nicholas when he was Sheriff; and that these justices are harassing him greatly. He asks that the commission might be repealed, or the justices ordered to halt proceedings until the King is better advised, or that some other remedy might be provided, so that he might not be dishonoured by the suit of one who is not a worthy man, or by justices who are his enemies - as he will always be ready to answer any accusations, but would hope that before justices who are not suspect few would complain.
Nature of endorsement

Note
This petition was apparently formerly enclosed with CCW 1244-1326 pp.440-441, which is dated 1 April 1316. CPR 1313-17 p.493 is also dated 1 April 1316. CPR 1313-17 p.401 is dated 20 February 1316. CPR 1313-17 p.419 is dated 20 October 1315: if John de Eure later replaced William Inge, this would seem to be the commission complained about.Nicholas de Menyll was Sheriff of Yorkshire between May and October 1315.
