Description
Petitioners
Master, brothers and sisters of the Hospital of St Katharine by the Tower, London.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that from time immemorial no Mayor, sheriff of bailiff has been allowed to enter the close of the Hospital or to arrest or distrain anyone there, and that this has been upheld by the King, but that on St Paul's day last the sheriffs of London entered the Hospital, arrested one William Rikhill, and took him away to prison. They request letters to the Chancellor rehearsing this matter and ordering him to send for the Chief Baron of the Exchequer and for the prisoner and to return him to the hospital; and that the Marshal of King's Bench or of the Fleet might bring him there safely.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned

Thomas Bekynton, Master of the Hospital of St Katharine by the Tower

Note
Tentatively dated on the guard to c. 1446, with reference to Thomas Bekyngton, formerly Master of the Hospital of St Katharine by the Tower. The refernce to him as 'then master' would suggest a date after he left that office, and his successor was in post by 1446. However, the reference to Ralph Barton as sheriff of London would seem to date back to events of 1418-19.
