Abbot of Chester
Nature of request
Letter of the Abbot of Chester to Edward III asking to be excused for not sending a cart to York in accordance with his recent request, as his house is impoverished, and he has recently promised the King money for the marriage of his sister, as he holds of the King's son and not of the King, and as, according to the liberties of his house, he does not owe services of this kind.

Chester, [Cheshire]
York.
People mentioned

[Edward of Woodstock], Earl of Chester.
Note
This petition mentions the marriage of Eleanor of Woodstock with Reginald II of Guelders in 1332, and the creation of Edward of Woodstock as Earl of Chester in March 1333. It would therefore seem to date from around 1333. The cart would probably be intended for service in Scotland, most likely for the re-taking of Berwick.CCR 1330-3 p.589 is dated 26 June 1332, and CPR 1330-4 p.422 is dated 27 May 1333.
