Nature of request
The consuls of Monclar state that, at the command of Robert Roze, Seneschal of the Agenais, they executed ten members of the household of Amaneu de Fossaco, knight, including his illegitimate son, for robbery, depredation and sacrilege; but that Amaneu is persecuting them for this, so that they cannot pursue their business freely. They request the King's letters to the Seneschal of Gascony, to protect and defend them from all harm from Amaneu and his supporters, and to prohibit Amaneu from inflicting any harm on them or any of them, on pain of body and property, and they also request the King's letters to Amaneu to desist from this persecution: and if he does not, since it is a matter that touches the King's justice, they ask the King to take legal proceedings against him by his proctor for the Agenais.
Nature of endorsement
A letter is to be written to Amaneu de Fossaco, reciting the matter contained in this letter, to cease completely from his injuries and molestations to the people of Monclar, on the occasion [described in this] letter. And the King will name certain of his lieges in a writ who, having inquired more fully into the truth of the matter, might do for him what is just in this business.And the people of the aforesaid town are likewise to have the King's letters of protection and safeguard.
