Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/191/9535
Date
[1316-1329]
Description
Petitioners
Peter de Galicien, Treasurer of the Agenais.
Name(s)
de Galicien, Peter
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Agenais, [Guyenne, France]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France].
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged and partly illegible.] The petitioner makes four requests. 1) He states that all the goods, bailiwicks and issues of the Agenais are assigned by the Constable of [Bordeaux], so that he cannot make the payments he is ordered to make from the same sums, and specifies a remedy for this state of affairs, which he asks the King to implement. 2) [Almost entirely illegible, but he appears to be requesting some bailiwick that should pertain to the office of Treasurer.] 3) He states that all the King's officers and ministers in the Agenais, except the Treasurer, receive certain annual wages, besides their fees, for their expenses when travelling on the King's business, whereas he receives only a very limited sum. He asks that he might be paid at the same rate as the Mayor, Judge or Ordinary, and that he might have the King's letters for this. 4) [Almost entirely illegible, but he appears to be complaining about his inability to make necessary repairs to the castles under his care.]
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] It is to be done and used as has been used in the time of other Constables and Treasurers before now . . . to the King's profit.[On face, to second] It is to be received by the one who should rightly do it, and as has been done hitherto.[On face, to third] The King is not minded to increase the wages or expenses of any of his ministers beyond what has been customary hitherto.[On face, to fourth] . . . to the Seneschal and Constable . . . they will ordain such repairs as seem to them to be necessary.[None on dorse].
Note
Peter le Galicien was appointed Treasurer of the Agenais in August 1316, and was appointed Constable of Bordeaux in September 1329. He was still Treasurer in 17 Edward II: unless he was appointed to another office between then and 1329, the petition must date from between these dates.
