Date
[c. 1406]
Description
Petitioners
Robert Thorley and Reginald Comters (Comtors).
Name(s)
Thorley; Comters (Comtors), Robert; Reginald
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Robert Thorley and Reginald Comters state that by the King's ordinance they occupied the posts of Treasurer and Victualler of Calais, and that at the time of their discharge, various sums were still due to various people. They were then re-appointed, and still occupy these posts, but do not have the wherewithal to sustain the payments necessary for the salvation of the town and its march. They ask that payment might be made, both of the sums they have mentioned, and for what is due from the time of Thomas Nevyll, Lord Furnival, and that a good and sufficient ordinance might be made for future payment, from a set annual sum, specified for time of war and time of peace, to be taken from the customs and subsidies on wools, hides and wool-fells in London, Southampton, Chichester, Ipswich, Lynn and Hull.
Nature of endorsement
The King, with the advice and assent of the lords spiritual and temporal in parliament has granted this petition in all points, as is contained therein.

Note
According to D. Grummitt, 'The Financial Administration of Calais during the reign of Henry IV, 1399-1413', English Historical Review, 133 (1988) pp.277-299, Robert Thorley was Treasurer of Calais between March 1403 and October 1404, and from after the Easter term 1406 to March 1407. Lord Furnival's period as Treasurer came between these two. This petition would therefore seem to date to around 1406.
