Description
Petitioners
Prioress and nuns of Studley.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Prioress and nuns of Studley state that in the forty-third year of Henry III, the King of Almaine wrote to them asking them to present Michael de Norhampton to the church of Beckley, and that they declined, as they had already presented two clerks to that living at his request, and did not wish him to steal the advowson from them by deceit. The King of Almaine empleaded them concerning the advowson, and wrongly took it from them, and presented Michael, who has withheld tithes from them, driven off their animals and shamefully mistreated them: to the extent that they have been unable to work their land, and are greatly impoverished. They request peace from him, and justice in their wrong.
