Nature of request
The Master of the Temple makes three requests:1) He asks that he might be released on mainprise, and that he might have some of his brothers to keep him company, until the King orders their deliverance or his will, as he will become ill if he remains in the castle any longer.2) He asks the King to make some ordinance concerning the chantries given to the Templars.3) He requests a remedy concerning the pensions and other maintenance given by the Templars to various people.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to second] The chantries and alms are to be maintained as they should be.[On face, to third] The allowances which have hitherto been granted by those who have power to grant them, for money or for possessions or for good service, to various people for term of life, are to be made, according to the advice of the Treasurer and of the King's council, when they have shown their titles; and to those to whom pensions are due it is answered that when anyone comes forward to sue and show his title, he will be given a fitting response.[None on dorse]
Note
Probably datable to shortly after 1308, when Edward II ordered the imprisonment of the English members of the Order of the Temple. The order was suppressed by Apostolic decree in 1312.
