Date
[c. 1342]
Description
Petitioners
Messengers of the city of Bayonne.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[This petition is partly illegible]The messengers of the city of Bayonne make two petitions:1) [This petition is largely illegible, but seems to concern possible illegalities in the process against some rebels.]2) The messengers state that Peter de Puyane has been elected Mayor of Bayonne, and acclaim him as a good Mayor in time of war. They request the King's letters patent confirming this election, notwithstanding the controversy it has created.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first petition] . . . King is not to do anything that is to the prejudice of the party, without calling and hearing the parties.[On face, to second, deleted] It is to be shown to the King.[On dorse] With regard to the confirmation of the estate of Peter de Puyane, it seems that the King should confirm it in the manner that they request, and that the letters of confirmation should be delivered to the Seneschal of Gascony, together with letters to request the Mayor, Jurats and hundred peers to reconcile the appellants and restore them to their goods and treat them amicably, for the love of the King, in such a manner that there might be a good peace and good accord among them, and if they do so, that the Seneschal is to have delivered to them the same letters of confirmation, and it seems that it would be good that the letters of confirmation should be shown to their proctor before the departure (?) of the council, and it seems good to send the appellants the letters of credence that they want . . . will have said to them on behalf of the King touching the correction and agreement among those of the town.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, Gascony.
People mentioned
Edward, Duke of Aquitaine
Peter de Puyane
Mayor, Jurats, hundred peers, and community of Bayonne.
Note
Carte, vol. I p.105 is dated 27 June 1341. The letters in m.16 of C 61/54 are dated 4 December 1341, and the confirmation is dated 1 June 1342. This petition would therefore seem to date from around this time.
