Nature of request
The abbot and convent request that the king take the abbey into his hands and place it in the keeping of the chancellor, the keeper of the rolls of Chancery, and the chief justices of both benches, and that he take the abbey and its lands, tenements, rents and other possessions and goods into the king's safe-keeping and protection. The abbot and convent state that they were founded by Edward III, the king's grandfather, for the alms of the king, his progenitors and heirs, and that they were endowed to make divine service with tenements and rents in the city of London, some of which are lost by false inquisitions and brokage and others are on the point of being lost by imaginations of certain of the city.
