Date
[? c. 1403]
Description
Petitioners
Reginald Courteys and Margaret Courteys, his wife.
Name(s)
Courteys; Courteys, Reginald; Margaret
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Reginald and Margaret Courteys request that the king order the chancellor to investigate their claims to the manors of West Cliffe and Leigh Delamere, and do right to them. They state that they were granted these manors by Reginald de Cobham, but his son, also Reginald, has now taken them back, claiming that his father was not in sound mind.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Sterborough (Starborough), [Surrey]
Westclyve (West Cliffe, West Court), Kent
Legh (Leigh Delamere), Wiltshire.
People mentioned
Reginald de Cobham, Lord [Cobham] of Sterborough
Reginald de Cobham, son of Reginald de Cobham.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1403, with reference to a pardon of 4 December 1403 for the original grant being made without licence, but there is no firm indication that this is directly connected to this petition, and it does not include any mention of Leigh Delamere. However, the petition does not contain any obvious suggestion that the elder Cobham was dead (he died on 6 July 1403), possibly indicating that the petition predates both the pardon and Cobham's death, although the details of his health might also suggest a date towards the end of his life. Reginald Curteys died on 14 February 1419, still in possession of West Cliffe.
