Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/187/9308
Date
[1437]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and Convent of Vaudey.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Vaudey request exemption from the forthcoming half a tenth granted by the clergy of the province of Canterbury, due at midsummer next, as they are extremely impoverished and unable to pay without this causing the destruction of their house.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] By the Duke of Gloucester, 2 March.
Places mentioned
Vaudey, [Lincolnshire]
Canterbury province
Lincoln diocese.
People mentioned
[Humphrey of Lancaster], Duke of Gloucester.
Note
The petition refers to a half a clerical tenth due at Midsummer (24 June) next, and given the endorsement to the Duke of Gloucester, this would appear to be 24 June 1437, the payment date of the final moiety of the grant of one and a half tenths made by the clergy of Canterbury province on 23 December 1435, the only such occasion during this period when such a payment was due on this date. Given that the petition must date to the year leading up to 24 June 1437, the endorsement therefore presumably refers to 2 March 1437, which also fell during a session of Parliament.
