King.
Occupation
Prior of Axholme
Nature of request
The Prior of the Carthusian house of Axholme requests that the king appoint justices to determine the claims of Pool to a pension in their house. Pool has brought various cases against the house, and they cannot seek help from their founder, the Earl Marshal, as he is in the king's service.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Axholme, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
[Thomas Mowbray], Earl Marshal and Earl of Nottingham
William Pool, sergeant of law
William Hankeford, justice.
Note
Permission for the foundation of Axholme by Thomas Mowbray was granted on 26 June 1396 (CPR 1396-9, p.77). Mowbray, referred to here as Earl Marshal and Earl of Nottingham, was created Duke of Norfolk on 29 September 1397, and hence presumably the petition dates to the intervening period. He is described as being absent on the king's service at the time of the petition, and is known to have been sent on an embassy to Germany in early 1397, suggesting that the petition probably dates to around that time.
