Nature of request
The bailiffs and burgesses of Scarborough ask the King to ratify and confirm, with clause of licet, their franchises and liberties, granted by his progenitors and confirmed by King Henry, his father, and especially the clause that no sheriff, bailiff or other minister of the King should interfere in any summons, attachments, distraints or other such thing in the borough. And to better fulfil that clause, they ask that they might have full power of correction, punishment and oyer and terminer, by their bailiffs, in all cases that could come before the Keepers of the Peace and justices of felonies, trespasses and other misdeeds in the North Riding of Yorkshire, or before justices of labourers, servants, and craftsmen in the North Riding. They also ask that they might have the fines, issues and amercements arising from such cases, in aid of the repair of their quay.
