Description
Petitioners
Thomas Smyth (Smith) of Easingwold.
Name(s)
Smyth (Smith), Thomas
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Thomas Smyth requests that the king cancel letters patent granted to Manfeld on 4 May 1411 appointing him to the office of forester of Galtres. Smyth states that he was appointed to the office after the death of Bettis, and held it peaceably until Manfeld purchased letters, claiming that the king had made an earlier grant to him on 13 November 1403 but the letters had since been lost. Smyth states that no such grant was ever made, and the claim was fraudulent.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Easingwold, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Galtres Forest, [North Riding of] Yorkshire.
People mentioned
Richard Bettis
John Manfeld (Manfield).
Note
The petitioner was appointed to the office on 20 October 1407 (CPR 1405-8, p.366), and, as stated in the petition, Manfeld's appointment was confirmed on 4 May 1411 (CPR 1408-13, p.285). As this date is referred to in the petition as 'last past', the document presumably dates to some point in the ensuing twelve months (1411-12). The date of 13 November appears as 14 November in the patent roll calendar.
