SC 8/185/9234
Date
[c. 1405]
Description
Petitioners
John Michel.
Name(s)
Michel, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
John Michel requests payment of the outstanding arrears due to him for his office as serjeant-at-arms, to which he was appointed by Richard II and confirmed by Henry IV. His payment of 12 per day is in arrears by two and a half years, and he cannot secure payment due to the ordinance made at the last parliament held at Coventry.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Westminster
London.
People mentioned
Richard II, King of England
Nicholas Adam, serjeant-at-arms
sheriffs of London.
Note
Michel's grant was confirmed on 10 December 1399, while the Coventry parliament mentioned took place in October-November 1404. The guard note suggesting a date of c. 1407 appears to be based on a misreading of the petition, giving a date two and a half years after that parliament, whereas the petition only says that payment was in arrears by that amount. A date around 1405, shortly after the Coventry parliament, has been suggested. Michel appears as a serjeant throughout the first decade of Henry IV's reign.
