Date
[c. 1374]
Description
Petitioners
John West.
Name(s)
West, John
Addressees
King and Lords of Parliament.
Nature of request
John West states that Penbrigge and others ousted him from his lands in Hertfordshire, and stole various goods and chattels. When he sued a writ against them, Penbrigge bought a commission of oyer and terminer against him, claiming that West had stolen pheasants, partridges, hares and rabbits from his warren at Ayot St Lawrence, and various other crimes. The inquisition falsely convicted him, by which he was bound to Penbrigge in 400 marks, maliciously accused of other felonies, and thrown into prison for four years, where, for fear of his life, he was forced to release his lands to Penbrigge, and to end all court proceedings. He now requests action to recover his property, notwithstanding the releases made by him while in prison.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Hertfordshire
Ayot St Lawrence, [Hertfordshire].
People mentioned
Richard de Penbrigge (Pembridge).
Note
A commission of oyer and terminer against the petitioner for breaking Penbrigge's close at Ayot St Lawrence (presumably the accusation referred to in the petition) was issued on 12 May 1367 and re-issued on 20 January 1370. Given that the petitioner states that he spent four years in prison, this would presumably date the petition to some time during or after 1374.
