Date
[1421-1422]
Description
Petitioners
John Macclesfeld (Macclesfield), clerk.
Name(s)
Macclesfeld (Macclesfield), John
Addressees
King.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged and very incomplete.]John Macclesfeld appears to request confirmation of his possession of the hospital of St Anthony [of Vienne, London]. It would appear that, Henry V, while he was in Normandy and believing the hospital to be vacant, appointed Kinwolmarsh to the office, even though Macclesfeld was still alive and in possession.
Nature of endorsement
The king wills that the chancellor do right to the supplicant according to the effect of this bill.It is well answered.
Places mentioned
[Hospital of St Anthony of Vienne, London]
Normandy, [France].
People mentioned
Richard II, King of England
Henry IV, King of England
William Kynwalmarssh (Kinwolmarsh), clerk
[Thomas of Lancaster], Duke of Clarence.
Note
The reference at the end of the petition to 'the Duke of Clarence, your brother, who God absolve' clearly dates the petition to some point between the death of Clarence on 22 March 1421 and Henry V's own death on 31 August 1422. Macclesfeld was confirmed as warden of St Anthony's Hospital in London by Henry IV, and the appearance of the name 'Anthony' on two occasions in damaged sections of the petition would seem to indicate that this is the hospital in question. Due to the damage, the precise role of Kinwolmarsh in this matter is unclear.
