Nature of request
The petitioner states that recent offences regarding provision to the abbey of Bury St Edmunds are detrimental to the rights of the king and all patrons, and to the destruction of the abbeys, priories and the entire religion, and therefore requests that the king ordain remedy protecting the rights of patrons and allowing the houses the free elections to which they are entitled.

Given the handwriting and the context, this petition would appear to have been presented in response to the events at Bury St Edmunds in c.1385, whereby the monks sought papal letters regarding the provision of their next abbot without permission of their patron, the king.
