Nature of request
John Cheriton states that six years earlier he freighted a ship for the Levant, but when it was between Mallorca and Valencia it was attacked by a fleet of 25 galleys led by Bashar, the captain-general of the Ottoman Emperor. 36 of his men were killed, and he and 46 others were captured and enslaved. He has been ransomed, but the others remain in captivity, and he requests letters allowing him to collect alms and charity from the people of the kingdom to ransom the remaining captives. He also requests appointment to royal office, stating that he will also share the knowledge of Turkish galleys and fortifications he has gained during his journeys.

Note
Dated on the guard to 1540-42, with reference to the signature of John Russell on the face, admiral of England during that period. A series of letters from the petitioner to Viscount Lisle appear in 'Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic of the Reign of Henry VIII', vol.XV (London, 1896), no.1030 (18) (pp.528-30), dating from 1533-8. The last letter, dated at Marseilles in February 1538, mentions his capture by the Turks.
