Nature of request
The Prior and Convent of Hexham request that the king examine and confirm their rights to the tithes of five villages in the parish of Stamfordham. They state that Normanville granted certain tenements and the advowson of Stamfordham to Bernard, Prior of Hexham, and they held this until, following a dispute with the priory over the presentation, it was seized by Nicholas, Bishop of Durham, except for the five villages and their tithes. Lately, the king has sued a writ against Anthony, Bishop of Durham, claiming rights of presentment due to the forfeiture of Lovel, a Norman, and his wife Isabel, third daughter and co-heir of John de Normanville, for which he should have every third presentment. They ask that this matter have no effect upon their rights in these villages.
