Reference
SC 8/181/9048
Date
[c. 1298]
Description
Petitioners
Henry de Petyt Ryhil (Little Ryle).
Name(s)
de Petyt Ryhil (Little Ryle), Henry
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Henry de Petyt Ryhil states that he granted his lands to his son Richard, who paid him his farm until he died, when the lands passed to his brother Henry, who also paid him his farm for the whole of his life. He now requests mercy, as he has nothing by which he, his wife and his children may live.
Nature of endorsement
The king wills that the father shall have the rent for his life.
Places mentioned
Little Ryle, Northumberland.
People mentioned
Richard de Petyt Ryhil (Little Ryle), son of the petitioner
Henry de Petyt Ryhil (Little Ryle), son of the petitioner.
Note
An order to the escheator to hold an inquest into this matter was issued on 22 November 1298. Although that order appears to refer to a petition from Henry, it seems unlikely that this is that petition, as it contains far fewer details than the order (which explains that the problem was caused by the lands being in the king's hands during the minority of Henry's grandson, details presumably taken from the original request). The endorsement here also appears to grant the request, rather than the inquisition which the escheator was ordered to carry out, suggesting that this petition forms a slightly stage in this process.
