Date
[1272-1280]
Description
Petitioners
Echevins and community of Ghent.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Echevins and people of Ghent request letters of safe conduct to allow them to continue trading with England. They fear they will be arrested if they come to England, in retaliation for sums owed by the Countess of Flanders and Hainault and her son for goods seized in Flanders from English merchants, even though securities have been given and a licence has been granted. They state that Ghent has no connection with the seizures, and that they provide the king with a great deal of silver, more than the rest of Flanders, and this loss would be to his great damage.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Ghent, [Belgium]
Flanders
Hainault
London.
People mentioned
[Margaret], Countess of Flanders and Hainault
[Guy de Dampierre], Count of Flanders.
Note
This petition clearly relates to the long-running Anglo-Flemish trade dispute of the 1270s. As noted on the guard, it clearly dates to the period between the accession of Edward I in 1272 and the death of Margaret, Countess of Flanders in 1280, but no specific incident can be identified.
